Not surprisingly, two factors that contribute significantly to the volume of motor vehicle accidents in Nebraska and other states are high traffic volume and the consumption of alcohol. On particular days of the year, these two factors combine to result in a higher number of traffic accidents than other days of the year.
The five days associated with a high number of accidents due to the traffic volume and alcohol consumption combination include Memorial Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Thanksgiving, the Fourth of July and New Year’s Day. Significant percentages of the car accidents occurring over these holidays result in fatalities.
Other days are high on the list for number of traffic accidents due primarily to the high number of cars on the road. These include the day after Thanksgiving, also known as Black Friday, and the day of a professional football game in a city where a game is played. The combination of stress and high traffic volumes contribute to a high number of motor vehicle accidents on Christmas. Two days are in the top ten list of traffic accidents for reasons that are unknown: Friday the 13th and the six days after the switch to daylight savings time.
Unfortunately, motor vehicle accidents are not limited to ten notable days during the year. Car wrecks occur every day, and anyone who drives or rides in a car is a potential victim.
