According to the Nebraska State Patrol, a collision involving a tractor-trailer and a sports utility vehicle in Overton claimed the lives of two people and injured two others. The June 5 truck accident took place on Interstate 80 at approximately 2:30 p.m.
Authorities said the semi-truck was traveling westbound on I-80 when it strayed across the median about four miles from the Overton interchange and struck an eastbound Nissan Murano carrying a couple from Ontario, Canada. Police indicated that they are still investigating what caused the tractor-trailer to veer into oncoming traffic.
The Canadian couple, a 74-year-old man and a 76-year-old woman, were pronounced dead at the scene. The occupants of the semi, a 50-year-old man and a 41-year-old man, suffered minor injuries in the accident, and they were transported by ambulance to a medical facility in Lexington, authorities said. They were subsequently treated and released.
This type of traffic accident, a head-on collision involving a semi-truck, is among the most dangerous motor vehicle accidents possible. Fatalities and life-changing injuries are the typical byproduct of such a destructive event. While many collisions like this one are the result of a driver who is either fatigued or distracted, it is in all certainty possible that a defective auto part is to blame for the June 5 semi-truck accident.
If that were the case, certain family members of the couple who died may be eligible to file a wrongful death claim against the owners of the semi-truck and the manufacturer of the faulty auto part. In this way, the victims’ family may seek financial compensation for the damages they suffered as a result of the fatal incident, including the expenses associated with the funeral services, burial and estate administration of the deceased couple.
