The Nebraska State Patrol and the Saunders County Sheriff’s Office are investigating a crash that took place on Jan. 24 and resulted in two fatalities. The accident occurred at around 10 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 77 and Highway 92 when a pickup truck heading north collided with a car traveling west.
The 29-year-old female driver of the car suffered fatal injuries. Her 32-year-old male passenger was taken to Bryan West Medical Center in Lincoln by medical helicopter, but he eventually succumbed to his injuries on Jan. 29. The driver of the pickup, a 43-year-old man from Osceola, was released from Saunders County Medical Center after receiving treatment. Authorities are still investigating what caused the wreck.
Some Nebraska car accidents taking place in the winter months are caused at least partly by snow or ice, but a driver can still be found negligent even if weather conditions are poor. For example, reasonable drivers are expected to slow down and use caution if the roads are slippery. If an accident investigation reveals that a motorist was traveling too fast to safely navigate roads while it was snowing, then he or she could be liable for expenses suffered by the victims of a crash. Negligence generally occurs when preventable accidents happen because of a driver’s failure to exercise the requisite standard of care.
A person who has been injured in a car accident that was caused by the negligence of another driver will often face high medical expenses and in many cases lose wages due to an inability to work during the recovery period. A personal injury attorney can often be of assistance to such an injured victim in seeking compensation for these and other economic losses through the filing of a lawsuit against the at-fault motorist.
