Highway crash in Nebraska leaves 1 dead, 3 hurt

A collision involving a semitrailer and a passenger vehicle nearby Elm Creek during the evening hours of Nov. 17 claimed the life of one individual and injured three others. Authorities believe snowy road conditions may have contributed to the fatal accident.

According to the report, the wreck occurred on I-80 when an oncoming semitrailer drove in the middle of the roadway, jackknifed and smashed into a vehicle traveling in the opposite lane. Due to the slippery surface of the roadway, the vehicle swerved out of control after the driver, a 19-year-old woman from Torrington, slammed on the brakes.

As a result of the impact, a 55-year-old female passenger in the vehicle died, and two other passengers in the same vehicle, a 43-year-old woman from Ogallala and a 20-year-old Bayard man were injured. The driver was also hurt; however, the 55-year-old big rig driver, who was from Eden, Ohio, was uninjured.

According to the Nebraska State Police, no one except the truck driver was using seat belts when the crash happened. At the time of reporting, the nature and extent of the victim’s injuries were not disclosed.
