Nebraska residents can take solace in the fact that awareness campaigns aimed at informing teens of the dangers of texting while driving are producing results. However, evidence suggests parents and authority figures need to do more to ensure that the teens in their care understand how important it is to keep their eyes on the road at all times.
A study shows that the percentage of teens who text while driving has dropped to 40 percent. Researchers were thus surprised to find that 27 percent of the teenagers surveyed admit to risky behaviors like putting contacts in, applying makeup, finishing homework or even changing clothes behind the wheel.
Distracted driving is the number one cause of car accidents. Whether a driver is distracted by food, a phone or stress about getting to school on time, the consequences can be tragic. After surveying teens in Washington, Oregon and Idaho, researchers asked them to participate in an interactive drivers’ education course. Following the short class, which was designed to educate the teens on the dangers of multitasking behind the wheel, the researchers again surveyed the students. The results showed slightly improved judgment on the part of the participants, suggesting similar programs could go a long way in reducing the incidence of distracted driving. Researchers also noted that parents play a big part in the habits that teen drivers develop and should encourage their children to make safety a priority.
In a situation in which an individual is injured or killed in a car accident, a lawyer experienced in personal injury law may be able to file a claim on behalf of the victim’s loved ones. If a reckless or negligent driver is at fault, a lawyer may be able to secure compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
